Who do you work with?I predominantly work with health and aged care professionals, with the majority of them being nurses. I also work with allied health professionals and non-clinical leaders in the health and aged care sectors. Some of our services are applicable for any sector, such as leadership coaching/mentoring. We can discuss if I am the right person to meet your needs in a free Discovery Session.

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring? Many people use the terms interchangeably, in fact, they are different. Whilst both are focused on creating a supportive learning environment for the client, which results in professional growth and enhanced performance, they differ in their approach. A Mentor is an advisor that shares their experience and advice to guide an individual to learn faster than they may do alone. A Coach uses questioning to explore the client's beliefs and thoughts, and to identify goals and strategies, using the client's experiences and knowledge. A combination may also be helpful depending on your situation, and goals.
-
Is coaching/mentoring for me?I don't pretend that coaching/mentoring is for everyone! But if you are struggling in your current role, looking to enhance your performance, dealing with challenging situations or want to prepare for or apply for that dream job. Or if you need to work through barriers and get clear about the next steps to achieve your goals then coaching and/or mentoring might be for you. A free 30-minute Discovery Session will soon let you know if coaching/mentoring is for you.
-
What happens in a typical coaching session?Coaching provides a safe space to discuss your frustrations, challenges, and goals, with someone who is entirely there to help you achieve, to listen without judgement, to ask questions that make you consider different perspectives, and often to be a sounding board for ideas you already have but need to work through. Together we will come up with a plan as to what goals/outcomes you want to achieve, then we’ll explore what is keeping you from success, the barriers and assumptions, and explore your thoughts to gain clarity on what you are trying to achieve and why. Then we’ll identify simple steps you can action straight away. Each session builds on the last to achieve your chosen outcome.
-
What happens in a typical mentoring session?Similar to coaching, mentoring provides a safe space to discuss your frustrations, challenges, and goals, with someone who is entirely there to help you achieve, to listen without judgement, to ask questions that make you consider different perspectives, and often to be a sounding board for ideas you already have but need to work through. Together we will come up with a plan as to what goals/outcomes you want to achieve, but unlike coaching, I will offer advice and share my experience with you. Mentoring includes more of a 1:1 education, where you will move to increase your knowledge and skills in leadership.
-
How do I choose a coach/mentor?You will most likely want to consider their background, if they have completed qualifications in coaching, rather than a 2-day course, and if they understand your situation or industry. Then it comes down to do you feel comfortable and feel you can speak openly without judgement and gain the outcomes you want to achieve. A free Discovery Session with any coach/mentor should be able to answer these questions for you.
-
Do you provide services to my location?I provide all our services across Australia and New Zealand. I provide all coaching and mentoring services online via Zoom, and in-person by request.
-
I’m not sure what package I need? All packages are tailored to your specific needs, so don’t worry about which package, I can discuss what you are looking for at a free Discovery Session.
-
How often will we meet? You will be in complete control of your coaching/mentoring package, it is flexible, so depends on what you feel works best for you. Many clients like to meet fortnightly and schedule all their sessions at the start, so they have a clear plan. Others like to decide session by session, especially if they want to complete certain actions before their next session.
-
Will our sessions be confidential? All sessions will be strictly confidential. Only in circumstances where an organization has contracted our services will certain information be shared as per the coaching/mentoring contract. In that circumstance, all information will be shared with the coaching/mentoring client prior.
-
Why would I choose Focus Education and Coaching over another coach/mentor?I know what it’s like to stand in your shoes. I bring real-life experience to coaching/mentoring, having 30 years of experience in health and aged care, I’ve most likely experienced what you are going through. You won’t need to waste valuable time trying to explain the setting, the politics or what you do, we can get straight to the core of the issue.
-
What is your professional background? My background is in nursing, education and leadership roles. As a life-long learner, I continue to increase my knowledge and skills in all areas of leadership and coaching. Having completed many qualifications, the most relevant being a Master of Professional Studies – Nursing Education, a Master of Business Administration and a Graduate Certificate in Organisational Coaching. Find out more about me.
-
Do you offer sessions after hours and at weekends?Knowing that health and aged care professionals are very busy people and that it can be difficult to commit to sessions during the workday, I recommend you consider attending coaching/mentoring sessions outside of work hours. This will prevent those distractions, and interruptions, and allow you to achieve the greatest benefit from your sessions. I provide extended hours, offering sessions early morning, evenings, and Saturdays. Sundays at an additional cost, by special request.
-
Isn’t coaching/mentoring just for executives? There is no set role or reason for engaging a coach/mentor. Coaching/mentoring is for everyone. Everyone can benefit from focusing on their goals and having someone to bounce ideas and be challenged to consider different perspectives and actions to achieve success. The common reason people hire a coach/mentor is that they value ongoing professional development, particularly leadership development.
-
Do you only coach/mentor on work-related topics?I coach/mentor the whole person; therefore I understand that non-work-related issues impact work performance. It can be difficult to achieve goals when something unrelated is impacting, whilst I don’t engage clients for “life coaching” it may be necessary to explore all issues impacting performance.
-
Do you use any tools or assessments?Tools & assessments can be particularly useful in raising awareness of your strengths, preferred styles of thinking and learning. I am accredited in the use and debriefing of various Hogan assessment tools. Participation is entirely optional. Any additional fees will be discussed prior. If you have previously completed assessments these can be used also.
-
Isn’t professional coaching/mentoring expensive? Most clients look upon it as an investment, an investment that usually provides greater returns than the cost. Consider the value of getting that promotion, gaining back that work-life balance, or feeling successful in your role. Can you put a value on those? As a lifelong learner that has been fortunate enough to benefit from coaching and mentoring, I believe that education, coaching and mentoring should be accessible to everyone, and our pricing reflects the health and aged care industry rates of pay.
-
What payment options do you offer?I accept BPAY, credit cards (excluding Diners and American Express), and instalment options can be negotiated.
-
Is the coaching, mentoring or education fee tax deductible? You may be able to claim fees as a self-education expense. A tax receipt will be provided, and I recommend you discuss it with your tax agent.
-
Does coaching and/or mentoring count as part of my Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirement?Yes - The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requires you to engage in CPD activities to meet the NMBA’s registration standard on CPD each year. The NMBA state that the type of learning activities selected can be broad and varied. Research shows that CPD is more effective when it involves planning and reflection - a key element of coaching and/or mentoring.
-
Can I cancel a session if something comes up?I understand that things come up, and you will be in complete control of your coaching/mentoring program. I do have a cancellation policy, where notice of at least 8 hours is required. In exceptional circumstances, the cancellation policy may be waived through prior agreement.
-
What if coaching/mentoring is not what I thought it would be?What can be expected will be discussed in your free Discovery Session, a clear outline will also be documented in a coaching/mentoring contract.
